2007
This was a solo exhibition at ProArts gallery in Oakland, CA as part of their "Summer Solos" Program. I borrowed excerpts from Walter Mosley’s novel, Blue Light, as an imagined guide for helping me narrate the ongoing story of Oakland’s crisis with violence. The wall map and tapings mark 2007 homicide locations from January until the opening date of the exhibition in June of that year. It shares in a dialog with smaller paintings I created about how and when each of us chooses to ‘cross the line’ (the line between action and inaction, heaven and earth, right and wrong) in order to achieve personal freedom.
